Request Services

All students seeking accommodations for a disability must register with Office of Disabilities (ODS). ODS staff works collaboratively with students to ensure that students with disabilities are not subject to discrimination. Students should register no later than June 1st for the Fall semester and December 1st for the Spring semester. Non-housing related requests received after these dates will be reviewed but a decision may not be reached prior to the start of the semester. Due to the logistics and advanced planning required for specific accommodation and housing-related requests, any such requests received after the deadlines may be processed in the order that they are received but they will not be made effective, if granted, until the start of the following semester. Every student must complete the Accommodation Request form and submit current, appropriate, and full documentation of the disability as requested by ODS. The second step is for the student to participate in a collaborative meeting to discuss their needs and review the information submitted. A final decision cannot be made until the Office of Disabilities has the appropriate forms, documentation, and the collaborative meeting is complete.

These guidelines have been established by the University of Miami to determine eligibility for reasonable accommodations as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), including the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008. The University of Miami follows and abides by the definitions and requirements set forth in these statutes. These guidelines are for current and incoming students enrolling in classes at the University of Miami. Accepted freshman and transfer students are advised to submit documentation immediately after being accepted and well before finalizing their decision to attend the University of Miami. Students should not assume that accommodations provided in high school will automatically be granted in college. It is important for incoming students to submit early as university fees and deposits cannot be refunded if accommodations are not granted. The review process may take up to four to six weeks for complete information and is dependent on the number of requests. All requests are processed in the order that they are received. Longer delays will apply for incomplete documentation or documentation submitted at peak times such as freshman orientation and final exams.
